One of the most complete and intriguing UFO sightings with the famous H symbol on the belly took place in the Spanish skies in July 1985. The professional caliber of the witnesses – an entire crew of Iberia Airlines – leaves no doubt. The captain of this 727, Carlos Garcia Rodrigo, an experienced pilot with sixteen thousand flight hours and five years in the Air Forces, recounted the encounter to J.J. Benitez as follows:
It was a splendid morning. The sky was blue, without a single cloud. We were flying the Barcelona-Madrid route. It was IB-1331. We flew relaxed, without any concern. Established altitude: 29,000 feet (Translator’s note: about 9,700 meters). And around 1:45 pm, above Maella (Teruel), far away and about 15 degrees above the horizon, something lens-shaped appeared. It was titanium-colored. (Translator’s note: sic) (...) (Translator’s note: It is regrettable that the quote is thus cut...)
But it was not an airplane. The “lens” changed shape and became spherical. “This is not an airplane, it must be a weather balloon.” And we began to pay full attention to it. Then, as we approached, we clearly saw that “it” was totally spherical and of a somewhat darker color than aluminum. I decided to report it to Barcelona Control. The truth is that it was huge and could pose a potential risk to navigation. Barcelona responded, “Negative, we have nothing.” It was very high. We estimated about twenty-five to thirty thousand meters. Barcelona advised us to notify Madrid Control. “Negative,” Madrid replied, “we have no reports.” It was strange. Madrid should have detected it. My aircraft appeared on the radar. “Call the military to track the area...” We then communicated with Zaragoza and informed them of the presence of this object. In short, that we were approaching it and that “it” continued “to grow and grow.” In my opinion, it was stationary or almost so. At that moment it appeared as a large metallic ball. As you can imagine, the atmosphere in the cabin heated up. “This” was not normal. And we discovered that it was not a weather balloon. It lacked the typical instrumentation usually hanging from such artifacts. But then, what was it? I called the military radar of Calatayud (“Siesta”) again, but the response was also negative. It did not have anything on its screen. At that point, another colleague entered the frequency: a plane flying from Valencia to Madrid. And he communicated: "Affirmative. We see it too. You have an object up there... I have it in sight and I confirm that it is not a weather balloon." So I decided to call the rest of the crew. They all passed through the cabin, confirming our impressions: it was a sphere, it had no wings or tail, it was enormous and dark in color. In total, there were nine witnesses. It was like three or four times the size of a Jumbo. And we were flying below this "thing." It remained motionless, majestic. The sun, at its zenith (it was noon, solar time), illuminated the upper cap of the sphere. The lower part, obviously, appeared darker. And we positioned ourselves under "that." We called Madrid and the military again. We confirmed the position and reported that we had it directly above us. Negative response. The object continued to be undetected on the radars... The entire crew of flight IB-1331 was able to observe the immense metallic sphere with the symbol of H on its belly. As soon as we passed underneath, we all looked at it through the upper hatches of the cabin. And the tension multiplied upon discovering this symbol on the underside of the sphere. We had no doubt then. "That" was something abnormal. On the belly, to describe it that way, appeared a sort of "H," with another vertical bar in the center. It was something audacious, in black standing out with absolute clarity. At that moment, I felt fear. An energy field? Could it affect the plane? This gigantic, motionless "thing" in the sky had to sustain itself somehow. Fortunately, the instrumentation was not affected at any time. We did not have any issues. What could this "H" be? I don't know. Maybe closed doors. Perhaps a mark or a protrusion painted in black. What was clear was that it was something artificial and perfectly defined. Despite the shadow in that area, it was discernible with absolute clarity. I remember saying: "Madrid, I report an UFO phenomenon. Take note. I will file an official report..." And I did just that. There was one copy for the Iberia company and another for Civil Aviation. All of this remains, of course, recorded in the respective control towers and radar stations with which we established contact. A metallic sphere. There is no doubt about this. If it had been a stratospheric balloon, we would have distinguished the typical deformations on the sides. Furthermore, as I tell you, "that" was not elliptical. It was a perfect sphere. I activated the plane's radar but, just like "Siesta" and Madrid, it picked up nothing. According to my calculations, the observation lasted approximately seven to eight minutes. That is, for a little over a hundred kilometers. I will never forget it... 1064 / 1373
